Extreme Weather Events

League of Women Voters of Massachusetts asked State Rep candidates in the 15th Middlesex to respond, in 500 characters or fewer, for their upcoming Voter’s Guide.

What should the legislature do to help communities prepare for and recover from extreme weather events?

Corporate interests extract, peddle, and burn fossil fuels putting our health and environment at risk and communities of color directly in the line of impact. We must codify environmental justice into law, invest in accelerated transition to clean energy, keep fossil fuels in the ground, modernize the grid, stop greenhouse gas pollution, and implement carbon pricing. MEMA (Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency) and DPH (Department of Public Health) direct responsible recovery and building in the wake of climate events and must be ready to deliver the services we need.
